Loc Up

Loc-Up is an instant dreadlock starter kit. This kit is for someone looking to start their dreadlocks journey and have the tools necessary to maintain the hair until it is fully locked up. This project was for my Package Design final and we were only given the requirement of a minimum of three items. we were challenged with making a unique packaging design and experience for our intended customer. Part of that experience is the intended use of the container after it is opened. I wanted something that could be reused and easily stored so I opted for a vertical oblique cylinder that can be placed on countertops or in cabinets. Part of that functionality is the split door where you can grab just the maintenance products. Splitting up the products in this way guides the customer and makes the complicated world of dreadlocks a little simpler.

Process

At the beginning of this project, I had extravagant ideas of making the box a dreadlock or boxes with intricate functions, however, I simplified my box to 1.) make a less expensive and easier box to create and 2.) make the experience of the user more streamlined and intuitive.

As I began coming up with names and the look and feel of the brand, I reflected on my own experience and how my experience looking for hair care was. I decided to use my own dreadlocks as a basis for the logo and motifs to make them more personal and unique. I also kept it a bit simple with the name loc-up because most other dreadlock brands will have overly thought names.

After drawing the dreadlock motifs I tried to create the logo by completely hand drawing the whole thing. I enjoyed the look but it was starting to feel a little unprofessional which was not the look I was going for.
